Democracy in retreat around the world If the U.S. government did not fund Freedom House, it could have justifiably added the U.S. to the list. That aside, it is a worrisome trend that democracy is waning after so recently seeming to triumph around the globe. This is a direct result of the idiotic policies of the Clinton and Bush Administrations in failing to support new democracies and making that a centerpiece of our policy. It also supports the policies of our elites, who have always preferred dealing with a compliant dictator rather than a messy democracy (lately, it seems, they've decided to try the same approach here at home).
