And those who are killing it have names and addresses!"--Utah Philips In my mind there are Pirate Barons who at least pretend they are in charge and some of these Buckaroos have enough political and financial swagger to raise a lot of hell. I've seen one disastrous war after another since I was hatched in '42 with many friends and loved ones blown to hamburger. I felt right out of the hatch that something was seriously screwed up. My earliest memory was one of my uncles in uniform at the foot of the crib. I was not impressed and I screamed bloody murder. When Japan was nuked even as a child I was not impressed. The films of the mushroom clouds I thought looked like devils. When we had to duck under our desks during nuke drills at Holladay Elemetary my wee mind began to turn away from fear to become anger. I was pissed! In my teens some of my pals would wave the flag in praise of the Yankee Doodle arsenal of nukes. I remember telling them that they were living in a pipe dream and that someday anybody who wanted to own a nuke would be able to have one. Then what? Some say that war is just the way it is, but do some who declare this just by chance seem to be deeply nested in an adolescent merchant/warrior culture? Imagine that! When I was in High School I listened to Ike's final speech warning us about the military/industrial complex. I thought that speech was remarkable! Not much later John F. got his brains blown out on the streets in Texas. My buddies went down permanently in Viet Nam. My early childhood impressions that something is seriously wrong proved valid. Maybe the warmongers, the pirates, the gun-runners only pretend that they are in charge-- but in this pretending they drench the world in blood. Maybe there are more spiritual entities, seen and unseen, who are really in charge. Hopefully soon these holy ghosts will get their spiritual butts in gear. In the meantime I'll probably maintain my singular protest, in some cases nose to nose.--Kent
