9:21:51 PM EDT More on Volunteering Veterans

They are opening closed bases.....Kelly AFB, Lowry AFB

Lowry is expecting refugees on Sunday. I have called local Salvation Army and Regional FEMA here in Denver still no response. This is stupid.

Heard from VN nurse in Florida that there was a call out and she responded and has been called back.

This is from one of our Vietnam Red Cross worker on our Incountry Vietnam Women's email list. You may want to contact her to see where she called... In a message dated 9/3/2005 7:12:37 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, Tried to send message but maybe somebody will read this. This is Lindsey--I

got home from a trip Thursday and as I caught up with local paper found out

local ARC chapter asking for volunteers to send to disaster zone. I emailed them

and by darn, they called me right away! So just got back from all day crash

course in disaster relief, CPR, etc. Looks like they are going to send me this

week, possibly Monday. Have to take sleeping bag, flashlights, etc. because

not know yet where will be. Is for three week period. Just got my hair chopped

off since heat index is about 110 they said. As of yesterday there were

179,000 people in 246 Red Cross shelters. Disaster coordinator said ARC was on scene

in New Orleans way before Katrina but when the shooting started, National

told them to pull everyone out. Not like our days as DD's eh? Charlotte Kozak--I

got your message but will catch up with you after I get back. Love from

Lindsey This is what I got from a full Col (DR)that served in Gulf War by email

Are kidding? They have not asked for our advice in 14 years. Why should they defer to us now even thought there are many in my unit that do this type of work every day? Preventive medical specialists, water engineers, veterinarians, entomologists, housing experts. There are essentially NO medical assets in the NG except for an Area Support Medical Battalion which has only 1 Preventive Medicine Officer. They depend on activation to be augmented by USAR. 75% of ALL US Army medical assets are int he USAR. This was changed after Desert storm without asking any of the people who had just fought a war. These people who did the reorganization were a bunch of desk sitting paper pushers-the result shows in the rag tag operation called "refugee help." Bitter? Yes I am So our country has trained professional veterans that are not being contacted to help in this disaster. We have huge groups of trained veterans wanting to help having trouble getting on the way to help! IS this right??????? DSNurse
