Subj: Info: Vatican Observ. "grim" discovery story Date: 7/15/99 12:58:17 PM Pacific Daylight Time I just wanted to let you know that I conducted a very comprehensive search for the Vatican Observatory story using an international news database with over 4,000 resources. I was looking not just for the AP story but also for any other news media which may have picked up and ran AP story. I searched for all of 1999 in case this all started earlier in the year. There were no hits in any of the sources searched. Now, while I would like to say that completely closes the door on this subject, I can't because I have seen stories run on the wires one day and then when you go back to look for them, they're gone. Here is a very recent, perfect example which even involves the Vatican. This story ran on Reuters on July 13, 1999 just as you'll see it now: Vatican scandal book author says Satan in Church ROME, July 13 (Reuters) - One of the authors of a book about sex and power intrigues inside the Vatican whom the Holy See has ordered to appear before a court said on Tuesday he stood by the allegations and would not attend the hearing. Monsignor Luigi Marinelli, who risks being stripped of his priestly prerogatives, told Italian state television RAI he did not want to raise ``another thick cloud of dust'' and so would not turn up for Friday's hearing of the Sacred Roman Rota, the Vatican's highest appeals court. Asked whether the litany of alleged sins committed inside the Holy See contained in the book ``Gone with the Wind in the Vatican'' were true, Marinelli said: ``If it's true or an exaggeration, I refer to what Pope Paul VI said...in 1972: 'I have the impression that some of the smoke of Satan has entered the Church of today'.'' Pope Paul steered the Roman Catholic Church through a period of revolutionary change after the Second Vatican Council. Marinelli, 72, who worked for 35 years in the Vatican's Congregation for Oriental Churches, faces charges of defamation brought by a relation of a cleric allegedly libelled in the book, among other charges. Marinelli has protested he is only one of a number of authors and he is being made a scapegoat. ``It was a work carried out at a distance. We don't know each other or how many of us there are,'' he told RAI. Chief Vatican Spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls has declined comment on the book, which came out in February. The Vatican has ordered Marinelli to remove it from shop shelves. 17:08 07-13-99 BUT NOW the story is gone. You can GO NEWSSEARCH here on AOL and key in Vatican and Satan which should bring up the story but it's not there any longer. So that's why I can't say for CERTAIN that the alleged story never ran only that based on the fact that no other news media picked up the story, it *probably* didn't run. Well, that's it. Just thought I add my two cents. God bless. Name Withheld
