(AP) - A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck extreme western Indonesia, 200 miles from an earthquake that caused a devastating tsunami a week ago, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Wednesday. The survey's seismographs in Golden, Colo., placed the earthquake's epicenter 125 miles west of Jaya Pura on the Indonesian island of Irian Jaya. It struck about 3 a.m. Thursday local time, or 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday, said USGS spokeswoman Marion Fisher. The quake was 200 miles west of the magnitude 7.1 earthquake of July 17, which generated a tsunami that killed at least 1,600 people in Papua New Guinea. Fisher said she had no report of damage or casualties from the new earthquake but added that it had the potential to cause damage due to its location and size.
